Trébrivan is a small agricultural Breton village; we reckon it's a terrific place to take a holiday because not a great deal goes on. If you're looking for bright lights, clubs and lively bars, this probably isn't the destination for you.
If, however, you're looking for gentle evenings after a day's rambling in some of the glorious scenery in the locale, either in front of the wood burner with some music playing or on the patio watching bats, swallows, swifts and assorted birdlife as you sip some decent wine...
On summer nights, we often get spectacular sunset views from the patio:
Within an easy walk, around the back of the principal church, there is a boulangerie (bakery) which also sells basic provisions. It's owned by a young local couple who have always been unfailingly friendly with us as we get our daily baguette and occasional pain au chocolat. They open early and stay open most of the day (except Wednesdays) and are even open on Sunday mornings.
Immediately opposite Le Bout de Sac is Trébrivan's bar-restaurant: Bar L'Alsa-Breizh. The bar is open from quite early in the morning (around 07:00) and is open all day except Thursday afternoons. All the information below is how things are at Oct 2009; the new proprietor, Jean-Luc, has only just started developing his ideas. Things that work well for him will remain avialble, things that don't will undoubtedly change.
How we currently understand things is that three course "plat du jour" lunches are available Mon-Fri from around 12:00, you'll undoubtedly get served if you arrive by 1230 and probably later as well.. The lunches are currently priced at €8.50 a head (drinks extra). On Saturday and Sunday evenings from 1900, the restaurant serves a variety of Tartes Flambée - you need to book for this. If you're arriving in Trébrivan and want to eat in the bar/restaurant that evening you can call 0033 296 36 60 56 - it's likely that you'll need some French on the phone, but Jean-Luc will do his best to help.
In the past, the bar has not opened late into the evenings - you could expect it to be shut from 20:00 at the latest on weekends and earlier in the week. Jean-Luc still closes quite early in comparison to UK pubs and bars, but especially at weekends L'Alsa-Breizh is often open later into the evening - basically it depends entirely on who's around; how much they're spending and whether Jean-Luc needs some sleep! Apart from the occasional car pulling up or leaving, though, we've never heard any unwarranted noise from the place - rowdiness etc just isn't part of what goes on here.
The bar also has a "depot de pain" (they buy bread in to sell to the public) daily in case you find the couple of hundred metres walk around the church to the boulangerie too taxing. The bar is no longer a tabac, but we believe that cigarettes can be bought provided you are a legitimate customer of the bar: i.e. you'll have to buy something else as well.
You'll find a light-hearted article about Bar L'Alsa-Breizh which you might find either useful or enjoyable (perhaps both) if you click here (opens a new window).
Trébrivan is very much a living community with a school and an active church, as well as the picturesque XVth century Chapelle St Anne directly outside Le Bout de Sac:
Finally, there's no promise that you'll spot any particular birds, but we've had some very attractive visitors to the garden / patio over the years. It's possible to do quite a bit of birding whilst just sitting and enjoying breakfast; this photo was taken from the dining table in the kitchen:
